OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES
Possum Kingdom plays host to an abundance of outdoor activities. The lake is well known for boating and water sports. Hells Gate cove just off the western boundary of Gaines Bend is the most popular place for gathering together numerous boats, socializing, swimming and floating around.
Fishing has been outstanding in the past few years and the numerous fish guides for hire can pretty much guarantee inexperienced anglers a full catch. Scuba diving which was once extremely popular is making a comeback. The Scuba Divers School of Fort Worth has used Gaines Bend as a training location for over 30 years.
Land-based activities are much more popular in the 9-month off-season. Golfing at The Cliffs 4-star course is great; hiking on any section of the 17 miles of trails is incredible with breath taking outlooks over rocky outcroppings; and kayaking below the dam in the section of the river designated as the John Graves Scenic Riverway is nothing less than superb.
There is cycling along Hwy16/337, mountain biking the trails, bird watching , horseback riding, and skeet shooting. Several ranches in the area have adapted their operations to include activities offered to the general public such as ATV tours, day hunting, even exotic game hunting, target shooting and rustic gatherings like chuckwagon dinners and cowboy campfires.
